Fever in Children, A Practical Guide for Parents

The number is a clue, not a verdict

A child with a temperature of 39 who is drinking, playing and making eye contact is usually in a different situation from a child at 38 who is listless. Behaviour is the more reliable signal, and it is the one worth describing to your doctor.

Age changes the threshold

Under three months, any fever is a same day conversation with a clinician. Between three and six months it depends on how the child looks. After that, the focus shifts to duration and to what else is happening.

What actually helps

Fluids, rest, and a correct weight based dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen when the child is uncomfortable. Treat the child, not the thermometer reading, and never alternate medicines without asking for a dose plan first.
