Imaging Explained, What Your Scan Report Really Says

Why the language is so careful

A radiologist describes what is visible, not what it means for you. That is why a report can read as alarming and still end in a recommendation for a routine follow up. The finding and its significance are two separate judgements.

Phrases worth understanding

Unremarkable means normal. Cannot be excluded means the scan could not settle the question, so the next test decides. Interval change means comparison with an earlier study, and it is often the most useful line in the document.

Questions worth asking

What does this finding change about my treatment, and what would we do differently if the scan looked normal. If the answer to both is nothing, you have your context.
